AI Film Contests for Students 2026: Six Open Contests With a Student Category, Division or Discount

Six AI film contests that are open right now have something built for students: a student category, a student division, a student fee or a student award.

10 min readContest facts checked against live sources daily

They are the African AI Film Festival, Atlanta AI Ad Fest, the AI International Music Video Festival, the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards, the World AI Cinema Competition at India's Jaipur International Film Festival, and WAIFF Los Angeles. Two of them cost $10 or less to enter, none lists a large student-only cash prize, and the earliest deadline is September 30, 2026. Each one was checked against the organizer's own page on September 19, 2026.

The six, in deadline order

The AI International Music Video Festival closes first, on September 30, 2026, with results due October 5. The African AI Film Festival follows on October 20, then Atlanta AI Ad Fest on October 25, and the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards' regular deadline on October 31. WAIFF Los Angeles has a regular deadline of November 30, and JIFF's World AI Cinema Competition takes entries until December 5. If you have one finished film and a small budget, that order is also the order to decide in: the first two decisions have to be made within about a month.

Three things separate these from the dozens of contests that merely say students are welcome. Each of the six either has a student-specific award or category, gives students a lower fee, or runs a separate student division with its own prize. That is the test used here. Contests that accept anyone, students included, but offer students nothing extra are covered in the free AI film contests guide instead.

African AI Film Festival: free for students, closes October 20

The African AI Film Festival is the cheapest serious option on the list. Its rules page says Africa-based filmmakers and Student & Emerging entrants enter free at any deadline, while everyone else enters free until the September 30 regular deadline and pays $5 to $10 at the late deadline of October 20, 2026. The Student & Emerging category is for first-time filmmakers and enrolled students, with films of 1 to 10 minutes. It is one of nine awards, alongside Best AI Short Film, Best AI Animation, Best AI Documentary, Best Director, a Cultural Resonance Award, Best of Festival, an Audience Award and Best Film by an African-Based Filmmaker.

The catch is the eligibility test. An entry must meet at least one of three conditions: the lead filmmaker has African or African-diaspora heritage, the film centers African stories, languages, history or culture, or the work is an African collaboration. AI has to be central to how the film was made, whether that is generated video, animation, imagery, voice, music or script. Entrants must be 18 or older, except that under-18s can enter Student & Emerging with guardian consent.

Winners get trophies and laurels, tool credits from sponsors including Runway and Adobe, mentorship and pitch access, and a screening slot at the Hollywood premiere on November 21, 2026 or the Kampala premiere on December 12, 2026. The jury is four people from four countries: Amira Sayed of Egypt, Joan Kabugu of Kenya, T.J. Seaman of Nigeria and Pauline Nabbosa of Uganda. ElevenLabs is listed among the founding partners.

Atlanta AI Ad Fest: a university division with cash

Atlanta AI Ad Fest is the only contest on this list with a division reserved for currently enrolled college and university students. It also has a Youth division for Grades 6 to 12 and an Open division for professionals. Each division's Grand Prix carries $500 cash, the festival guarantees $2,500 in cash prizes overall, and Best of Festival adds $1,000. The entry deadline is October 25, 2026, finalists are announced November 10, and the awards night is November 22 in Atlanta.

Be clear about what it is: an advertising festival, not a narrative one. Entrants choose one of four official Brand Exclusive Tracks, make a spot against that brand's brief, publish it and then submit. Judging is weighted 40 percent idea, 30 percent craft, 20 percent brand and 10 percent impact, so a beautiful film that ignores the brief loses to a plainer one that answers it. The fee is a single $10 registration that includes 5,000 Bloomway credits, with no separate submission fee. Registration was scheduled to open September 15, but the festival's site still showed it as not yet open when checked on September 19, so confirm before planning around it.

AI International Music Video Festival: the earliest deadline

The AI International Music Video Festival has a Best Student or Emerging Creator award among its categories, and its rules tell students to provide a valid middle school, high school or college student ID to receive a discount. Its FilmFreeway page lists a regular deadline of September 30, 2026, a notification date of October 5 and an event date of November 14. It accepts work made with substantial use of AI tools, and also work that examines the consequences of the AI revolution, even if the film itself did not use AI. The page does not spell out the discounted fee in the text, so check the current tier on FilmFreeway before submitting.

Because it is a music video festival, a student who already has a song, a band or a friend with tracks can turn a short around quickly. The same festival lists separate awards for AI music composition, visual creation and AI-human collaboration, so a student entry can stack a second award on top of the student one.

Hollywood AI Short Film Awards and JIFF: the two late deadlines

The Hollywood AI Short Film Awards explicitly lists students among eligible entrants and has an Emerging Creator Award of $250. Its cash total is $2,750: $750 for Best Picture, $250 for each of seven genre awards (Drama, Comedy, Thriller, Horror, Sci-Fi, Documentary and Animation), and $250 for the Emerging Creator Award. Deadlines run regular October 31, late December 15 and final January 11, 2027, with notification on January 22. The ceremony is February 13, 2027 at the London West Hollywood Screening Room in Los Angeles, during Super Bowl weekend. Student pricing is not published as a separate line on the page, so treat the entry fee as the standard tier.

JIFF's World AI Cinema Competition, part of the Jaipur International Film Festival running January 8 to 12, 2027, has a dedicated AI Student Film category alongside AI Short, Feature, Documentary, Animation, Experimental, Music Video, AI-Assisted Film, AI Screenplay and AI Innovation awards. Deadlines are late October 15, extended November 15 and final December 5, 2026, and nomination lists are published November 5, December 5 and December 21. Entries in the earlier windows are judged into the earlier lists. The competition accepts all durations and languages.

JIFF also runs a separate 2 to 7 minute movie-making competition for school, college and university students with a November 30, 2026 deadline and a listed ₹1,00,000 prize pool. Its page does not say that AI use is required or whether entry is limited to India, so read the rules before assuming it applies to you.

WAIFF Los Angeles: the Cannes route, with a student award and a student fee

WAIFF Los Angeles, the U.S. edition of the World AI Film Festival, is open to creators aged 13 and older. It gives a Best Student-Submitted Work award selected across all categories and a Best Youth-Submitted Work award for ages 13 to 18. Students and youth pay less at every tier: $15 at the July 31 early-bird deadline that has now passed, $25 at the regular deadline of November 30, 2026 and $35 at the late deadline of January 20, 2027. The standard prices are $30, $45 and $60, and feature films add $5 per tier for students and youth.

The festival is in Los Angeles in late March 2027, and five U.S. representatives advance to the WAIFF Cannes 2027 finale on April 6 and 7. Nine categories are open: live-action short (3 to 40 minutes), feature, animated short (3 to 40 minutes), documentary, vertical and mobile (30 seconds to 3 minutes), music video, advertisement, AR/VR/XR and gaming. The page does not say whether the Best Student award counts toward the five who advance, so do not assume it does. For most students the realistic route to Cannes is winning a main category.

HKBU Future Film Fest: closed for 2026, worth reading anyway

Hong Kong Baptist University's Future Film Fest is the best-funded student AI contest of the year, and it is no longer accepting entries. Its FilmFreeway page lists a regular deadline of June 25, 2026, a notification date of August 31 and an event on October 27 to 30, 2026 in Hong Kong. Our own listing had shown October 31 as the deadline until this page was checked; it has been corrected and the contest is now marked closed.

It is still useful as a template for what a serious student AI contest demands. The festival grew out of the Global University Film Awards, known as the University Oscars, which drew more than 2,500 submissions from 104 countries. The 2026 edition has a USD 66,000 total pool, but most of it sits in institution-nominated narrative tracks: two USD 15,000 Best Short awards plus USD 10,000 Jury Recommendation awards. The open AI Shorts category, for directors aged 30 or under who are current students or alumni, has USD 5,000 for Best AI Short and USD 3,000 for the Jury Recommendation.

Films had to be 10 minutes or shorter including credits, carry English subtitles, be completed on or after January 1, 2025, and use generative AI as the core mechanism. Live-action footage not substantially transformed by AI was prohibited, and the festival reserved the right to request original project files to verify the workflow, with disqualification for failing to provide them. Prizes were paid only after technical and identity verification. If you are at a film school, ask your department whether it is on the invited institutions list for the next edition.

What a student entry costs, and what it can win

Entering the three contests with confirmed fees costs $35 in total: the African AI Film Festival at $0, Atlanta AI Ad Fest at $10 and WAIFF Los Angeles at the $25 regular student tier. The fees for the AI International Music Video Festival, the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards and JIFF are published as tiers on their submission pages, so add those once you have checked them.

Student-specific cash is thin. The clearest figure is the $500 University Division Grand Prix at Atlanta AI Ad Fest. The Hollywood AI Short Film Awards pays $250 to its Emerging Creator winner. We could not find a stated cash figure for the student awards at the African AI Film Festival, WAIFF Los Angeles or the AI International Music Video Festival, so plan on laurels, screenings and tool credits rather than money. The bigger prize pools, including HKBU's, mostly sit behind an institutional nomination or an open category where students compete with everyone.

How to prepare one film for several of these

Cut a version between 3 and 10 minutes. That length fits the African festival's 1 to 10 minute window, WAIFF Los Angeles' live-action and animated short categories at 3 to 40 minutes, and the 10 minute cap HKBU used in 2026. Put English subtitles on it now, since HKBU required them and several festivals ask for them on non-English films.

Have proof of enrollment ready. The AI International Music Video Festival asks for a valid student ID, and the African festival's category is for enrolled students. Keep the age gates straight: WAIFF starts at 13, the African festival wants 18 or guardian consent, Atlanta's Youth division covers Grades 6 to 12, and HKBU capped directors at 30.

Keep a record of how the film was made. Save prompts, generation logs and project files in one folder, because HKBU showed that a festival can ask for them and disqualify an entry that cannot provide them. Check each festival's list of accepted tools too. Our database records Runway, Adobe Firefly, Sora, Kling, Veo, Midjourney, Pika and ElevenLabs as accepted at the African festival, and Runway, Sora, Kling, Veo, Luma, Pika, Midjourney and ElevenLabs at WAIFF Los Angeles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there AI film contests just for students in 2026?

Not many are only for students, but six open contests have something built for them. The African AI Film Festival has a Student & Emerging category and free entry for students. Atlanta AI Ad Fest has a University division with a $500 Grand Prix. The AI International Music Video Festival has a Best Student or Emerging Creator award, WAIFF Los Angeles has Best Student and Best Youth awards, the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards has an Emerging Creator award, and JIFF's World AI Cinema Competition has an AI Student Film category. All were verified on September 19, 2026.

Which student AI film contest is free to enter?

The African AI Film Festival. Its rules say Africa-based filmmakers and Student & Emerging entrants enter free at any deadline, and the late deadline is October 20, 2026. Films in the student category run 1 to 10 minutes. The catch is that the film must be by an African or diaspora filmmaker, center African stories or culture, or be an African collaboration, and AI must be central to how it was made. Atlanta AI Ad Fest is the next cheapest at a single $10 registration fee.

What is the cheapest way to enter several AI film contests as a student?

Enter the African AI Film Festival at $0, Atlanta AI Ad Fest at a $10 registration, and WAIFF Los Angeles at the $25 regular student tier before November 30, 2026, for $35 in total. Add the AI International Music Video Festival, whose student discount requires a valid student ID, and the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards, once you have checked their current fee tiers on FilmFreeway. A 3 to 10 minute film fits the runtime limits of the first and third of these.

Can high school students enter AI film contests?

Yes, at several. WAIFF Los Angeles accepts creators aged 13 and older and has a Best Youth award for ages 13 to 18. Atlanta AI Ad Fest has a Youth division for Grades 6 to 12. The African AI Film Festival lets under-18s enter its Student & Emerging category with guardian consent, and the AI International Music Video Festival accepts a middle school, high school or college student ID for its student discount. Check each festival's age rules before submitting.

What happened to the HKBU Future Film Fest?

Its 2026 submission window is over. Hong Kong Baptist University's Future Film Fest listed a regular deadline of June 25, 2026, a notification date of August 31 and an event on October 27 to 30, 2026. It has a USD 66,000 total pool, mostly in institution-nominated tracks, and an open AI Shorts category worth USD 8,000 for directors aged 30 or under who are students or alumni. Ask your film school whether it is invited to nominate students for the next edition.

Does my school need to nominate me for a student AI film contest?

For most of them, no. The African AI Film Festival, Atlanta AI Ad Fest, WAIFF Los Angeles, the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards, JIFF and the AI International Music Video Festival take direct submissions. The exception is HKBU's Future Film Fest, where the USD 66,000 narrative and institutional AI tracks required nomination from an invited film school, while its open AI Shorts category did not. Students proving enrollment usually just need a student ID.

Which student AI film contest deadline is first?

The AI International Music Video Festival, on September 30, 2026, with results on October 5. After that come the African AI Film Festival on October 20, Atlanta AI Ad Fest on October 25, the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards' regular deadline on October 31, WAIFF Los Angeles' regular deadline on November 30, and JIFF's World AI Cinema Competition on December 5. Later deadlines at the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards and WAIFF run to January 2027.
