AI Film Festival Entry Fees in 2026: What Open Contests Charge and Which Are Worth Paying

Most AI film festivals charge between $5 and $55 to enter a short film, and about one in five open AI film contests in our database charges nothing at all.

Contest facts checked against live sources daily

As of October 8, 2026, the free ones include the two largest cash prizes on the circuit: PixLight 2026 ($300,000 pool, closes October 31) and the Vigloo Short Drama Festival ($20,000, closes October 11). Paid festivals range from €6 at IA Play Madrid to $55 for a late short at WAICF India and £75 per category at WAIFF London's late tier. Roughly half of the open listings point you to FilmFreeway or Festhome without publishing a price on their own site. This page shows what open AI film contests charge, what the fee buys you, how to tell a fee worth paying from one that only sells a laurel, and how to pay less.

How AI festival fees compare to the wider festival market

Stephen Follows analysed the fees of 4,631 film festivals in September 2025. Across deadline stages, average short film fees ran from about $30 to $55, and feature fees from about $47 to $87. He also found the average festival offered 37.5 different fee options once you count categories, formats and deadline tiers.

AI festivals mostly sit at or below those averages. The Berlin AI Film Festival charges $10 to $40 by deadline tier. The International AI Short Film Festival (IASFF) in India charges $15 at its standard tier and $30 at its extended deadline. The Korea-based KCAIF charges $15 to $20. The Hollywood AI Short Film Awards charge $25 to $55 per category, close to the market average, and WAICF India charges $35 to $55 for a short and $70 to $100 for a feature.

The outlier is the free tier. On the traditional circuit, free festivals are rare. On the AI circuit, the biggest prizes come from AI tool companies and platforms that pay to find films made with their tools, so entry is free and the prize money is a marketing budget.

The free contests pay the most

The largest prizes open right now cost nothing to enter. PixLight 2026, run by PixVerse, has a $300,000 pool and closes October 31, but PixVerse has to be your main platform. The Vigloo Short Drama Festival pays from a $20,000 fund for vertical micro-dramas made entirely with generative AI and closes October 11. The Gossip Goblin x Showrunner competition has a $20,000 pool, closes December 15, and requires Showrunner Studio. Curious Refuge's holiday competition pays $7,500+ and closes December 6. In Australia, DAIFF (Disrupt AI Film Festival, run by TBWA) is free, has an A$10,000 pool and closes October 16. The Runway Hundred Film Fund is also free and funds projects from $5,000 to over $1,000,000.

Two catches come with most of these. Many lock you to one tool, so a film made in Runway, Kling, Veo or Sora cannot enter PixLight or the Showrunner competition without a rebuild. And free contests draw large fields. The free Chroma Awards drew 6,500 entries in its first season, according to Wonder Studios. Free entry costs you time, and the odds of any single entry stay long.

Where paid festivals land

Here is what some of the paid AI festivals with published fees charge, from our database on October 8, 2026:

IA Play Madrid: €6 per entry, €1,200 prize pool, closes January 1, 2027. All Is Prompt (Mexico, online): $8 at the extended tier until October 25. IA en Corto (Chile): $9 extended until October 18. Veritas AI Film Festival (Toronto): $9, closes November 30. Atlanta AI Ad Fest: a $10 registration that includes 5,000 Bloomway credits, $2,500 cash, closes October 25. KCAIF 2027 (Seoul): $15 to $20, closes April 10, 2027. Prompt Festival Toronto: $15, or $10 with FilmFreeway Gold. IASFF (India): $20 late until October 31, then $30 until November 10. GenTO Toronto: $20 to $40, closes October 20. AI Creativity Awards: £35 standard, £15 student, closes November 1. WAICF India: $45 for a short until October 15, then $55 until December 5. Golden Dunes Dubai: $50, or $35 for students, closes October 20. WAIFF London: £75 per category at the late tier until October 23.

The spread inside a single festival is often bigger than the spread between festivals. The UK Film AI Awards charge £10 until November 30, 2026 and £50 in the final April window, a fivefold jump for the same entry. WAIFF Cannes charges €15 until November 15, €30 until January 31 and €60 until its February 15, 2027 close.

What the fee buys you

A fee is worth paying when it buys one of three things: a cash prize, a screening in a named venue, or a route to a bigger stage. Laurels alone are the weakest return.

Cash: AI Filmfest Athens pays €1,000 in each of three competitive categories. Cine Prague pays a $1,000 Grand Prix. The AI M0V1E Film Festival pays $1,000 for the best feature, $700 for the best series and $500 for the best short. The Hollywood AI Short Film Awards pay $2,750 in total, including $750 for Best Picture and $250 per genre award. WAICF India advertises up to ₹25,00,000 in cash across categories.

A named venue: Golden Dunes screens in Dubai on November 28 with its awards ceremony at Belcanto on the Dubai Opera rooftop. The Hollywood AI Short Film Awards hold their 2027 ceremony at the London West Hollywood Screening Room on February 13, 2027. The UK Film AI Awards screen ten finalists live at London Film School in May 2027.

A route to a bigger stage: each WAIFF regional edition sends its top five films to the World AI Film Festival final at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes on April 6 and 7, 2027.

A fee refund: the LundinStudio AI Film Festival refunds the submission fee for winners on top of $300 cash, with a Sydney screening on March 18 and 19, 2027. It is one of the few festivals that pays your entry back.

Red flags before you pay

SubmittingToFilmFestivals.com lists about 20 warning signs of fee-collecting festivals. The ones that show up most on the AI circuit are an "awards only" festival with no public screening, dozens of award categories, a year-round open call, no named jury, no verifiable past winners, digital certificates instead of a screening, and the same organiser running near-identical festivals in several cities. On the IndieFilmHustle podcast, Alex Ferrari tells filmmakers to walk away from any festival with no public screenings.

None of these makes a festival a scam on its own. A new festival will not have past winners yet, and some honest online festivals have no physical venue. Use them as a scoring sheet. Before paying, look for four things on the festival's own website: a venue name and date for the screening, the jury's names, last year's winners, and the prize in money or a named benefit. Our listings record prize and fee as the organiser publishes them. When a listing says "laurels across seven award categories; no cash prize published" and has no venue, budget for it last.

Seven ways to pay less

Enter at the earliest tier. On festivals with tiered fees, the earliest deadline is usually the cheapest. UK Film AI Awards entrants who submit by November 30 pay a fifth of the final fee; WAIFF Cannes entrants who pay by November 15 save €45.

Check for FilmFreeway Gold pricing. FilmFreeway Gold costs $14.99 a month, removes FilmFreeway's service fees and gives 10% to 50% off entry fees at participating festivals. Berlin AI Film Festival prices drop from $10–$40 to $9–$36 for Gold members, and Prompt Festival Toronto drops from $15 to $10. If you plan five or more paid FilmFreeway entries in one month, subscribe for that month and cancel.

Use Festhome discounts for Spanish-language festivals. IA en Corto, All Is Prompt and IA Play Madrid all list a lower price for Festhome Annual Pass holders.

Ask for a waiver if you qualify. I'Mpossible Film Festival offers fee waivers to filmmakers facing financial, political or access barriers. The African AI Film Festival is free for Africa-based, student and emerging filmmakers and charges only the rest.

Use student rates. Golden Dunes drops from $50 to $35, and the AI Creativity Awards from £35 to £15.

Enter one category, not three. Most fees are per category. Pick the one where your film is strongest instead of paying again for a near-match.

Send the free entries first. Almost no AI festival asks for premiere status, so a film can enter the free cash contests this month and still go to paid festivals later.

A sample budget for one short film

Here is a realistic plan for one AI short, built from listings open on October 8. Free: PixLight if you work in PixVerse, Vigloo if you can cut a vertical drama, Curious Refuge Holiday, and DAIFF if you are based in Australia. Paid, with published fees: Cine Prague for its $1,000 Grand Prix (its fee is on FilmFreeway), the Hollywood AI Short Film Awards at $25 to $55 for one category, WAIFF Cannes at €15 if your country has no WAIFF edition, and IA Play Madrid at €6. The published fees add up to about $80 at most, before Cine Prague's FilmFreeway fee. That buys four free shots at cash prizes and four paid entries that pay cash, screen in a named venue or lead to Cannes.

Keep a sheet with one row per entry: festival, tier, fee paid, deadline, notification date and result. Compare fees against the prize and venue before you pay, and use the contest cards below to check each listing. WAIFF London is the most expensive common entry at £75 per category on its late tier. About one in five open AI contests in our database is free.

Which AI film contests are free to enter?

The biggest free contests open on October 8, 2026 are PixLight 2026 ($300,000 pool, closes October 31, PixVerse required), the Vigloo Short Drama Festival ($20,000, closes October 11), the Gossip Goblin x Showrunner competition ($20,000, closes December 15, Showrunner Studio required), Curious Refuge's holiday competition ($7,500+, closes December 6) and DAIFF in Australia (A$10,000, closes October 16). The Runway Hundred Film Fund is also free to apply to.

Are AI film festival entry fees worth it?

A fee is worth paying when it buys a cash prize, a screening in a named venue or a route to a bigger festival. AI Filmfest Athens pays €1,000 per competitive category, Cine Prague a $1,000 Grand Prix, and each WAIFF regional edition sends five films to the Cannes final on April 6 and 7, 2027. Festivals that offer only laurels across many categories, with no venue and no named jury, are the weakest return on a fee.

How can I tell if an AI film festival is a scam?

Check the festival's own site for four things before paying: a venue and date for the screening, the jury's names, last year's winners, and a prize stated in money or a named benefit. SubmittingToFilmFestivals.com lists about 20 warning signs, including awards-only festivals with no screening, dozens of categories, year-round open calls and the same organiser running near-identical festivals in several cities. A new festival may lack past winners, so weigh the signs together.

Does FilmFreeway Gold save money on AI film festival fees?

It can. FilmFreeway Gold costs $14.99 a month, removes FilmFreeway's service fees and gives 10% to 50% off entry fees at festivals that take part. The Berlin AI Film Festival drops from $10 to $40 down to $9 to $36 for Gold members, and Prompt Festival Toronto from $15 to $10. It pays off when you plan several paid FilmFreeway entries in the same month, and you can cancel afterwards.

Do AI film festivals offer fee waivers or student discounts?

Some do. I'Mpossible Film Festival offers waivers to filmmakers facing financial, political or access barriers. The African AI Film Festival is free for Africa-based, student and emerging filmmakers. Golden Dunes Dubai charges students $35 instead of $50, and the AI Creativity Awards charge students £15 instead of £35. The LundinStudio AI Film Festival refunds the submission fee to winners on top of a $300 cash prize.
