How Much AI Does a Film Need for an AI Film Festival? The 2026-27 Rules, Contest by Contest
Most AI film festivals do not set a percentage. Of the 66 open or upcoming AI film contests in our database on November 2, 2026, 47 accept any AI tool and only ask that AI play a real part in the film.
Three organizers put a number on it: the $1,000,000 AI Film Award 2027 requires at least 70 percent of the finished film to be generated with Seedance, the free MetaMorph x TapNow seasonal contests require at least 50 percent generated in TapNow, and the MetaMorph AI Film Award 2027 asks for AI in at least 50 percent of the creative or production process, not 50 percent of the frames. A fourth group locks you to one platform with no percentage at all: Showrunner, AKOOL and the Runway Hundred Film Fund. Everything else on this page comes from the official rules or our live listings, checked on November 2, 2026.
The short answer by type of rule
AI film contest rules fall into four groups. The first and largest is the "AI must be meaningful" group: Berlin AI Film Festival takes both 100 percent AI-generated films and hybrid works with meaningful AI integration, UK Film AI Awards asks that AI play a meaningful creative role, IA Play Madrid wants works that intentionally and creatively incorporate AI, and AI for Good asks that AI be a core part of the filmmaking while saying the film need not be fully AI-generated. The second group sets a number: 70 percent Seedance for the $1M award, 50 percent TapNow for the seasonal contests, 50 percent of the process for MetaMorph. The third group locks the tool: AKOOL must be meaningfully used and its logo must appear at the top of the video, every Gossip Goblin x Showrunner entry must be generated in Showrunner Studio, and the Runway Hundred Film Fund requires Runway in the project. The fourth group asks for something per scene: Lundin Studio AI Film Festival in Sydney and the Bengaluru Short Film Festival's AI section both require AI-generated shots in each scene.
The 70 percent rule: AI Film Award 2027, $1,000,000, closes November 20
This is the strictest rule in the directory and the one with the biggest prize. According to Gulf News, at least 70 percent of each completed film must be generated using Dreamina Seedance, ByteDance's video model. Other AI tools, traditional editing and original live-action footage are allowed for supporting elements as long as the Seedance minimum holds. Films run five to seven minutes, horizontal 16:9 at 1080p, on one of five themes including Humans and AI and Human Relationships. Entry is free and open to anyone 18 or older. Submissions close Friday, November 20, 2026; the top 10 and public voting begin December 15, the top five are named December 25, and the winner is announced at the 1 Billion Followers Summit in Dubai, January 8 to 10, 2027. AI integration is one of the five judging criteria alongside storytelling, creativity, aesthetics and technical execution. In practice that means you can shoot a live-action wraparound or a real interview, generate titles in Midjourney, score it in Suno and voice it in ElevenLabs, but at least 3.5 minutes of a 5-minute cut has to come out of Seedance. Keep a shot log that marks which clips came from Seedance so you can show the split if asked.
The 50 percent rules: MetaMorph and TapNow measure different things
The two MetaMorph rules look alike and are not. The MetaMorph AI Film Award 2027 rules on FilmFreeway say AI should be involved in at least 50 percent of the film's creative or production process, and add that this does not necessarily mean 50 percent of the visible frames must be entirely AI-generated. Script or concept development, AI music, voice synthesis, editing, VFX, compositing and character creation all count. Basic automated functions such as spell-checking, standard noise reduction or automatic subtitles normally do not. Hybrid films that mix AI with live action, practical effects or human performance are welcome. The fee runs from about €19 to €39 and the extended deadline is May 15, 2027.
The free MetaMorph x TapNow seasonal contests are stricter: at least 50 percent of the film must be generated in TapNow, and the canvas must be public so the organizers can see it. The Winter round closes December 30, 2026, then Spring on March 15 and Summer on May 15, 2027. Each round pays £500 plus 20,000 TapNow credits to the winner, and finalists move up to the main MetaMorph award.
WAIFF and the Production Journal: no journal, no review
The World AI Film Festival sets no percentage. WAIFF London says works must incorporate AI in their making, and then makes paperwork the gate: every submission must include a Production Journal identifying the AI tools used, and submissions missing one will not be reviewed. The same rule appears on WAIFF Los Angeles. WAIFF London also encourages Content Credentials (C2PA) on final files, the provenance metadata that tools such as Sora and Adobe Firefly attach to exports. WAIFF London is open to UK-based creators 13 and older, its super-late deadline is Tuesday, November 17, 2026, notifications go out November 20, and the event opens November 24 at Bloomsbury Big Top. Five works from London advance to the WAIFF Cannes 2027 Grand Finale. WAIFF Los Angeles, for US-based creators, closes January 20, 2027 and also sends five films to Cannes. A good journal lists each tool by version (Kling 2.x, Veo 3, Runway Gen-4), what you used it for, and what you did by hand. Write it while you work; rebuilding it from memory after the edit is where people leave things out.
Hybrid and live-action films: where they fit best
If you shot real footage and used AI for environments, VFX, de-aging, voice or music, you have more options than most filmmakers assume. Berlin AI Film Festival explicitly takes hybrid work, with fees from $10 to $40 and an extended deadline of December 31, 2026, ahead of its February 16 to 17, 2027 event. UK Film AI Awards accepts fully AI and hybrid productions including live action and human or AI voices and VFX, for films of 3 to 10 minutes; its £10 early-bird tier ends November 30. AI Cinema Québec City welcomes hybrid human plus AI and fully AI-generated work and says it judges cinematic craft, story and ethics rather than the tools used; it closes January 24, 2027. PROMPT Festival in Toronto accepts any project where AI was used anywhere in the creative pipeline, at $15 per submission, through April 16, 2027. AI Toronto Genre Awards uses the same "anywhere in the pipeline" wording and lists image, video, VFX, sound, voice, editing, screenplay and concept. AI Cinema Festival NYC runs a Best Human + AI Direction prize and a Responsible AI Cinema Award, with a June 20, 2027 deadline.
Where hybrid films struggle is at the strict end. A film that is 80 percent live action cannot meet the 70 percent Seedance rule or the TapNow rule, and contests built around one platform will not take footage from another. Lundin Studio and Bengaluru's per-scene rule also catch hybrids out: a single fully live-action scene can disqualify the film.
Outside the AI circuit: what the Oscars and the Copyright Office say
The mainstream rules matter because many AI filmmakers want their film to travel beyond AI festivals. In April 2025 the Academy added language to its eligibility rules for the 98th Oscars saying generative AI tools neither help nor harm a film's chances of a nomination, and that the Academy will weigh how much a human was at the heart of the creative authorship. It dropped a planned disclosure requirement, per TechRadar and Consequence. Ownership is a separate question. The US Copyright Office's January 29, 2025 report on copyrightability concluded that prompts alone do not give enough human control to make you the author of the output, while AI used as a tool does not bar protection for the human parts of a work, such as your script, edit, selection and arrangement. That is one more reason to keep a record of what you made by hand. Several AI festivals already require you to own all rights in the submitted film, including Québec City and NeoCinema.
How to check a rule before you pay a fee
Read the eligibility clause on the official page, not the listing summary. Look for four things: a number (70 percent, 50 percent), a named tool that must be used, a per-scene requirement, and a paperwork requirement such as a Production Journal or MetaMorph's 150 to 300 word submission statement, which asks for the tools used, which elements were human-made and the approximate balance between the two. If the rules say only that AI must be "meaningful" or "core", a short note in your director's statement naming each tool and its job is enough for most programmers. If the rules give a number, measure your cut against it before you submit; entry fees on FilmFreeway are usually non-refundable. When a clause is unclear, email the festival and keep the reply.
Which contests to enter, by how much AI is in your film
Fully generated in one tool: the $1M AI Film Award if your tool is Seedance (November 20), the TapNow Winter round if it is TapNow (December 30), AKOOL's challenge if AKOOL is in the mix (December 20). Fully generated across several tools: almost anything, starting with WAIFF London (November 17) if you are UK-based, Berlin (December 31) and WAIFF Los Angeles (January 20) if you are in the US. Hybrid with live action: Berlin, UK Film AI Awards, AI Cinema Québec City and PROMPT Festival. AI only in post, sound or script: MetaMorph's process-based 50 percent rule, PROMPT and AI Toronto Genre Awards. Frequently Asked Questions
- How much of my film has to be AI-generated to enter an AI film festival?
- Usually there is no fixed share. Of the 66 open or upcoming AI film contests on aifilmcontests.com on November 2, 2026, 47 accept any AI tool and only ask that AI play a meaningful or core role. The exceptions set a number: the $1M AI Film Award 2027 requires 70 percent Seedance, MetaMorph x TapNow requires 50 percent generated in TapNow, and the MetaMorph AI Film Award asks for AI in 50 percent of the creative or production process. Read the eligibility clause on the official page before paying a fee.
- Can I submit a hybrid live-action and AI film to an AI film festival?
- Yes, at many of them. Berlin AI Film Festival takes hybrid works with meaningful AI integration (extended deadline December 31, 2026). UK Film AI Awards accepts fully AI and hybrid productions of 3 to 10 minutes. AI Cinema Quebec City welcomes hybrid human plus AI work and judges craft, story and ethics. PROMPT Festival in Toronto accepts any project where AI touched the pipeline. Hybrids do not fit the 70 percent Seedance rule, TapNow's 50 percent rule, or per-scene rules at Lundin Studio and Bengaluru.
- What is the 70 percent Seedance rule for the $1 million AI Film Award?
- According to Gulf News, at least 70 percent of each completed film entered in the AI Film Award 2027 must be generated with Dreamina Seedance, ByteDance's video model. Other AI tools, traditional editing and original live-action footage can be used for supporting elements. Films run five to seven minutes in 16:9 at 1080p, entry is free for anyone 18 or older, and submissions close November 20, 2026. The winner is announced at the 1 Billion Followers Summit in Dubai, January 8 to 10, 2027.
- What is a WAIFF Production Journal?
- It is a document identifying the AI tools used to make your film, and the World AI Film Festival requires one with every submission. WAIFF London's FilmFreeway rules say submissions missing a Production Journal will not be reviewed, and WAIFF Los Angeles uses the same rule. List each tool and version, what it did in the film, and what you did by hand. WAIFF London also encourages Content Credentials (C2PA) on final files. Its super-late deadline is November 17, 2026.
- Does AI in the script, music or edit count toward a festival's AI requirement?
- At some festivals, yes. The MetaMorph AI Film Award 2027 counts script or concept development, AI music, voice synthesis, editing, post-production and VFX toward its 50 percent rule, and says 50 percent of the visible frames do not have to be AI-generated. PROMPT Festival and AI Toronto Genre Awards accept AI used anywhere in the pipeline. Contests with a generation rule, such as the Seedance and TapNow contests, count only footage generated in that tool. Basic functions like automatic subtitles or noise reduction normally do not count.
- Do I have to disclose AI use when I submit to a film festival?
- At AI festivals, almost always, and some make it a hard gate. WAIFF requires a Production Journal and MetaMorph requires a 150 to 300 word statement covering the tools used, which elements were human-made and the approximate balance. The Academy considered a disclosure requirement for the 98th Oscars but dropped it, saying generative AI neither helps nor harms a nomination. Even where it is optional, naming each tool in your director's statement avoids questions from programmers.
- Can I own the copyright to an AI-generated film?
- Partly. The US Copyright Office's January 29, 2025 report concluded that prompts alone do not give enough human control to make a user the author of AI output, while using AI as a tool does not bar protection for human contributions such as a script, edit, selection and arrangement. Many AI festivals, including AI Cinema Quebec City and NeoCinema, require you to hold the rights to everything in the film, so keep records of what you made yourself and the licenses for any stock, music or voices.
